Application of Electronic License Plate Based on RFID Technology in Smart Transportation

The answer, of course, is that it is an intelligent electronic license plate.
When it comes to smart electronic license plates, many people will feel curious. Here, we must give everyone a look at popular science licenses and the future development trend. At present, the most common localization and recognition of license plates basically relies on image recognition. After detecting the license plate number, it is compared with the list in the database. However, image recognition is greatly affected by environmental factors. It is easy to identify license plates and collect images. Blindness often occurs at the same time, and these uncontrollable factors limit the further development of image recognition.
In order to solve this series of problems, intelligent electronic license plate came into being. Intelligent electronic license plate is based on RFID technology, and RFID technology is a new non-contact automatic identification technology and traditional video and image processing license plate recognition technology. In comparison, RFID-based vehicle identification has high accuracy, is not easily affected by the environment, and has no blind spots. It can accurately and comprehensively obtain vehicle status information and road network traffic conditions. The future development trend will be the recognition of electronic vehicle license plates gradually replacing traditional license plates.

The core of the electronic license plate is the electronic tag based on RFID technology. The RFID electronic tag is divided into two types: active and passive. The advantages and disadvantages of the two types of tags are shown in Table 1.

Taking into account the service life and usage scenarios of electronic license plates, passive electronic tags have the characteristics of long life, small size and easy installation, and low cost, and are more suitable for vehicle installation and use. In the choice of communication distance, UHF UHF 860MHz ~ 960MHz passive RFID electronic tag has the advantages of long communication distance, fast transmission speed, and its use as an electronic license plate recognition is a very good choice.
Since the prospect of electronic license plate recognition is so vast, it certainly has many advantages and features that are incomparable with traditional image recognition technologies. What are the specific basic requirements and technological advantages? We simply list a few items as follows:
The basic requirements for electronic license plates:
Can store data (vehicle model, color, owner information);
Long-distance reading identification tag, fixed reading device distance of more than 10 meters;
High reliability, reading success rate of up to 99.99%;
A large number of tags can be identified at the same time, with a maximum of more than 200 per second;
Accurately identify tags in high-speed motion, and the speed of mobile recognition can reach more than 100km/h.
Electronic license plate technology advantages:
Data encryption, the use of unique algorithms in the tag communication process, third-party devices can not read;
Easy to install, without any special installation tools or materials;
The unique person card and garage group matching algorithm can accurately determine the illegally used motor vehicles;
All weather, you can work reliably in any weather conditions.
It is precisely because of the many advantages and characteristics of electronic license plates compared to traditional license plates. It is foreseeable that in the near future, motor vehicles will gradually use electronic license plates with electronic tags to replace the current traditional license plates, and thus, from the front of vehicles. The construction and development prospects of the entire platform, such as license plate recognition, data transmission, vehicle management, data storage, and terminal query, are very broad. Having said the principle and advantages of electronic license plates, there may be "old drivers" who are beginning to wonder. Is the electronic license plate really practical? Where is the specific application? Next, we simply talk about the application of electronic license plate.
Scenario 1: Smart parking system
Speaking of most of the current parking management, it may be that many “old drivers” have encountered more or less problems such as difficult parking, high fees and no parking spaces. In order to solve these parking problems, in recent years, the national policy has clearly put forward the application of high technology such as the smart parking system and the automatic recognition of license plates. In simple terms, the "wisdom" of smart parking is reflected in: intelligent space search + automatic parking fees.
So, how do you actually implement smart parking? Let’s take the most common parking lot. The most important technologies are license plate recognition technology and ETC technology. Before the vehicle with the electronic license plate enters the parking lot, the intelligent parking system can accurately identify the vehicle's identity over a long distance through the electronic license plate recognition device, record the time of entry and exit of the vehicle to accurately charge, enable the vehicle to pass quickly, and do not need to stop for manual recording. When the vehicle is parked and exits the parking lot, the smart parking system will use the license plate to identify the antenna and the electronic license plate for short-range communication. The driver will automatically complete the entire charging process without any need for the driver to stop or take any action.

Through the application of smart parking system can improve the efficiency, prevent the occurrence of "bottleneck" in the traffic at the toll station, and at the same time realize the charges for uninterrupted intervention through RFID technology, effectively restraining the behaviors of evading the parking fees, charging staff dereliction of duty, favoritism and malpractice. At the same time, it will reduce the administrative costs of toll stations and recoup infrastructure investment more quickly.
Scenario 2: Intelligent Traffic Management System
RFID technology can be used as an effective means of information collection in traffic dispatching systems and can be applied in traffic dispatch management systems. For example, applying RFID to a bus yard management system can realize automatic, accurate, long-distance, and no-stop collection of information when buses with electronic license plates are in and out of a station, enabling the bus dispatching system to accurately grasp the real-time dynamics of bus access to public parking lots. information. Through the implementation of the system, the management level of buses can be effectively improved. Computers can be used to conduct research and analysis on the collected data. The rules of use of vehicles can be grasped, loopholes in vehicle management can be eliminated, intelligent management of public transport vehicles can be achieved, and the image of the city can be enhanced.

In addition, the use of RFID as a technical means is highly economical, and has the advantages of convenient installation, strong adaptability, low cost, and no need for vehicle modification as compared with other technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS). At the same time, special dispatching and management can also be carried out for some special service vehicles such as garbage transport vehicles and dangerous goods transport vehicles. Through the electronic license plate installed on the vehicle, an identification device is placed at the monitoring point of a specific road section to monitor whether the vehicle is traveling in accordance with a prescribed route, and the position of the accident vehicle can be timely located when a sudden situation such as a leak occurs.
Through the introduction of the above two practical application scenarios, we have a more intuitive and clear understanding of the electronic license plate. Figure 5 shows an example of the application of the electronic license plate in specific industries.
